Mrs. Turner has made it her life’s mission to level the playing field to ensure that all students have access to a quality education
Vickie B. Turner is a long time resident of Dekalb County. She is a life long educator in the K-12 environment. She has garnered success as a Classroom Teacher, a Headmaster and perhaps her greatest accomplishment is mother to three adult children and five grandchildren. Mrs. Turner has made it her life’s mission to level the playing field to ensure that all students have access to a quality education. She is seeking re-election because her mission is not complete.
During her tenure as part of the Dekalb Board of Education she has experienced success in the following ways:
Dekalb County Schools regained full Accreditation
Stabalized and oversee an annual budget of over one Billion dollars
The elimination of furlough days for DCSD staff
Re-institution of a step pay raise for all staff
District to garner the reputation as the highest paying in Georgia for newly hired teachers
Increase graduation rates among High School Seniors
The inception of a Early Learning Center for Preschool students which houses a food pantry; clothing donations; parent GED classes
Increase Wrap-around services (dental; medical, vision and mental health) for elementary students
Increase of Community Partnerships within the schoolhouse
Established and maintained My Brother’s and My Sister’s Keeper initiative to address disparities that exist among students of color
Saw the completion of State of the Art buildings of over 8 new schools in the District
Double-digit gains in academic performance at schools that were previously identified as underperforming
Increase the presence of Parent Engagement Centers throughout the District
Mrs. Turner presently serves the Board of Education in the capacity of Vice Chairman and she works collaboratively with District leadership, Elected Officials and Community leaders. She has been recognized for her exemplary leadership, her willingness to advocate on behalf of the underserved and her tenacity in getting the job done. If asked to sum up her personality, it would simply be: She Cares.
She has received the following awards: The Esther Award; Nominated for NAACP Narvie J. Harris Education Award; Distinguished Community Servant Award; Hidden Figure Award; also awarded Certificate of Appreciation for Service from: Congressman Hank Johnson; 100 Black Women Coalition of Dekalb; Unsung Hero in Education and various awards from local schools in District 5.
Turner and her husband Councilman Robert Turner have worked tirelessly on a grassroots level to bring information to their community by way of The Dekalb Cultural Exchange (DCE). The DCE was founded by the Turners and meet once a month and invite Elected Officials, Community Leaders and other Government Leaders to come out and share current trends that affect the quality of lives for the Dekalb citizenry.
Mrs. Turner is considered a subject matter expert in the field of Education; Parenting; Marriage and Women Initiatives.
